Walt Disney's Uncle Remus Stories by Joel Chandler Harris

In this version of Uncle Remus Stories, there are several different stories to choose from with Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear, and Brer fox. These stories include the famous Brer Rabbit’s Laffin’ Place, De Tar Baby, and Why the Cricket Fambly Lives in Chimbleys and many other favorites from the fictional Uncle Remus. The stories in this book are stories of trickery, usually on the part of Brer Rabbit. While this is not necessarily a book modeling good morals, you could certainly read it to the class and discuss the various wrongs and rights of the story. What is also great about this addition is that the old-southern dialect that is written into the text, making it a great book for introducing and discussing dialect in literary works. Some consider the tone of certain stories to have racist undertones, this could be something you discuss with your class, and turn it into a lesson where they open their eyes to various types of hidden stereotypes or meanings. Overall, it can be a very fun book for read alouds, as you can get very creative with voices and the old southern dialect.
